The Navy League commenced in Tasmania in 1900. Vice-Admiral Creswell was the Vice-President of the Victorian Division. Although the Tasmanian Division has now amalgamated with the Victorian Division, Tasmanian representatives still work closely with the Navy Cadets. The Victorian Division Executive (recently changed to the Victoria-Tasmania Division) has guided and managed the Division for over 100 years in Victoria with the help of volunteers.
Many Navy ships, national and foreign, have visited Port Phillip and Melbourne. Significant events have included the Australian Navy Foundation Day – Creswell Orations (Foundation Day was 1 March 1901); the Centenary celebration of the Federation of Australia; the 1908 Great White Fleet visit; the HMAS Parramatta I and HMAS Yarra I arrivals; Melbourne-built naval vessel launchings and commissionings over many years; VADM Sir William Rooke Creswell Bronze Bust restoration at St Kilda foreshore; the first convoy of Naval Escort Troop ships to the battlefields 1914-2014 Commemoration; the victory over Emden and the many Trafalgar Day Anniversaries; the 2009 reception of HMAS Childers crew; and the first Naval College “Osborne House” Centenary.
